What your Florida auto premium is actually built from

Two drivers on the same street can be handed very different premiums. The figure is built from things you cannot change, things you can, and a statewide pressure behind both.

Two drivers on the same street, in the same model of car, can be handed very different premiums, and neither figure is arbitrary. An auto premium is built, not guessed. It is the sum of things you cannot change, things you can, and a statewide pressure that has been pushing every Florida rate the same direction. Knowing which part is which is the difference between shopping a price and actually lowering one.

What you do not control

Some of the number is decided before you say a word. Where the car spends its nights is rated at the ZIP-code level, so two households a county line apart can be quoted differently for the identical vehicle. The car itself now matters more than it used to: a modern bumper carries sensors, an ordinary repair has become an expensive one, and the carrier prices that in. And all of it rests on a statewide floor. Florida has one of the highest uninsured-driver rates in the country and a claims climate that has lifted rates for careful and careless drivers alike. None of that is about you, and all of it is inside your premium.

What you do control

More of the premium than most people expect is a set of choices. Your driving record and how long you have carried insurance without a lapse are the largest of them, and a gap in coverage usually costs more than the months it appeared to save. The limits you choose are next: the state minimum is the cheapest line on the quote and the one most likely to leave you exposed, which is why we show it beside a limit that would actually hold. Your deductible is a deliberate trade, a lower premium in exchange for more risk kept, and it is worth making on purpose rather than by default. The car you buy is a decision made before the policy exists, so we will quote one you are still negotiating and put the figure on the table while it can still change your mind.

How to read the quote you get

A quote is only comparable to another quote when the coverage underneath is the same, and a cheaper number often hides a thinner policy. We name the carrier on every quote and hold the coverage steady across them, so the comparison is real rather than flattering. Our auto coverage page lays out what a Florida policy is built from; if you want the longer version of the two pieces that move the price most, the notes on what PIP actually pays for and the state minimum and its gap are the two worth reading first.

Bring a current declarations page to any of our desks, including the two inside Naples dealerships, or start a quote, and we will build the figure with you and show you every part of it.
